OVERVIEW OF EXODUS

OVERVIEW OF EXODUS

OVERVIEW OF THE BIBLE- EXODUS

OVERVIEW- GENESIS GIVES US THE PROMISE OF A REDEEMER AND EXODUS
TELLS US OF THE ORGIN OF THE NATION THROUGH WHICH OUR REDEEMER
WOULD COME AND HE WOULD BRING US DELIVERANCE.
The overall theme in Exodus is DELIVERANCE. NO nation in history has ever developed from
slavery to Power and Organization as quickly as Israel did. In Exodus we see that GOD cares,
He listens, and He answers prayer. We see the making of a covenant and the stressing of
adherence to that Covenant by God that is demanded to be pleasing to Him.
No nation can exist long without laws and those in place to enforce it. It is in the book of
Exodus that we see God’s people coming from slavery to deliverance and the buildup of the
nation through whom God would bring forth His SON.
CONTENTS SUMMARIZED WITHIN THE BOOK- 19:4-6; 20:2
GOD IS ABLE TO DELIVER ISRAEL AND HE IS ABLE TO DELIVER US.
PAUL INFOMRS US IN 1 COR. 10:6 THAT THE ACTS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT ARE
GIVEN AS EXAMPLES FOR US, SO THE SALVATION OF GOD’S PEOPLE IN EXODUS
IS AN EXAMPLE OF OUR SALVATION TODAY.
In Exodus we pass over from a Patriarchal law to the Mosaic period.
Note this outline of the book:

CONDITIONS OF SLAVERY-1:1-22
BIRTH, EDUCATION AND CALL OF MOSES-2:1- 4:31
THE PLAGUES-5:1-11:10
THE PASSOVER-12:1-13:19
THE JOURNEY TO MT. SINAI
MIRACULOUS DELIVERANCE- 13:20-15:21
EVENTS ALONG THE WAY- 15:22-19:2
THE ESTABLISHEMENT OF A COVENANT (LAW)
PREPARATION-19:3-25
THE 10 COMMANDEMENTS- 20:1-17
ORDINANCES- 20:18- 23:33

RATIFICATION-24:1-8- Not only was this a law from a greater (GOD) to a lesser (Israel) it
was also ratification and in essence signed by all the people. In this it was dual covenant in the
ancient world. Israel would be called on several times to ratify and renew their allegiance to this
covenant with God. How quickly men can forget their promises but God never does.
THE PLACE OF WORSHIP-
PREPARATION- 24:9- 31:31:18
IDOLATRY AND JUDGMENT- 32:1- 34:35
BUILDING OF THE TABERNACLE- 35:1- 40:38
In 1-18 we go through Israel expansion in Egypt, oppression there in Egypt and Moses’
preparation in Egypt and the importance of slavery in Egypt to God’s people for many years of
their history down to the time of Christ (through Passover). We read about obstruction of
Pharoah in 5-11 and God’s deliverance from Egypt and preparing of the people by having them
go from Goshen to the Red Sea then through the Red Sea and from the Red Sea to Sinai ending
in 18:27.
The law section is from 19-24 the commandments deal with moral life 19-20; social life- 21-23
and religious life-24 (the tabernacle introduced). 25-29- the tabernacle is designed- delayed and
completed. Israel’s continues to be stubborn and continues to want to go back to idolatry in spite
of all the miracles God showed them to build their faith.
ISRAEL IS A PICTURE OF US TODAY AS THE SPIRITUAL ISRAEL OF GOD IN HIS
CHURCH, We Are fickle as they were, we are turned back and lack faith, as they did, we are
obedient as they were- but overall, we need to learn the lessons they did about giving up Egypt
(the world) and truly trusting and committing to the law of God.
As a side light, Let’s look at issues that can be solved by seeing what God has set as everlasting
principles for us even today. Capital Punishment- God authorized it in the Old Testament ( Ex.
20- thou shalt not kill or murder).:and he does today in Romans 13. God is against abortion ( Ex.
21:22-23) and the identity of children being in the womb and valued as life is throughout the
bible (NT AND OT). The Miracles occurred not only to build faith in the Israelites who knew
God, but to establish faith in the Egyptians who did not know God.
