What Does The Bible Say About Drug Use?

Question- What does the bible say about vaping, marijuana, fentanyl, alcohol, tobacco products, and other drugs? Is
it alright to do these drugs if you can control them?

Answer-God made man very special and unique from all other things He created. He made us with a dual nature
(flesh and spirit). We have the ability to reason and also to reject what our Creator instructs us to do to live
long and have a good life in the flesh. He also instructs us clearly on how to be able to live with Him in
heaven eternally. Being a special creation from God, we are bound to be good stewards of what he has
entrusted to us. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20- we read that “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.” In the
world of the Corinthians temples were sacred places dedicated to deities, and great care was given to them
to adorn them with honor and respect o the god they represented.
Paul is here making a comparison of the physical temples and our physical bodies. Since my body is not my
own, I am assigned to look over it to reflect its Maker and Owner. God knows that our bodies require
proper tending. With all of this being said, it would not be honoring God or ourselves to put substances
into our bodies that would poison them or take control of them away from us and put control in the
influence of drugs. The Bible does give room for some substances being used to help our bodies to heal
and those are to be delivered into our bodies by doctors, under special circumstances. It is an abuse of our
bodies and disrespect to God to put any substance into our bodies that would tear them down and hinder
reason and sanity in clear thinking to be able to have free reign. All of the things you have mentioned in
your questions take away from the building up of the body and instead, tear the body down and dissipate it,
rendering it limited in use for proper use as the possession of God.
The damage to the body of the above drugs is well known by most. Practically, we all can reason that these
drugs are not something that lead to clear thinking, but to the opposite. 1 Peter 4:3 says that a person who
is trying to serve the Lord should “no longer live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but he
should do the will of God. For the times past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the
Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, retellings, banqueting’s and abominable
things wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of
you.” The substances you ask about would also hinder us from pursuing the fruit of the spirit listed in Gal.
5:22-23- “” but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control, against these there is no law.” All of the things listed above do not promote in
someone the ability to make people truly happy, or gender peace, or for people to be law-abiding, and
compliant. Stay away from all substances that would hinder your body from being a properly prepared
dwelling place for God to dwell. These things mentioned do not encourage holiness and God does not
dwell where there is unholiness. (Habakkuk 1:13- “Oh Lord, your eyes are too pure to look upon evil; you
do not tolerate wrong-doing.” God opposes all sin, taking drugs like mentioned above freely without any
medical supervision, is unholy and sin. “Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thess,5:22-24).
